The Sears Holdings Culture

Where we've been

The Sears Holdings story has been years in the making. Sears, Roebuck & Co. began as a watch store in 1893. In 1925, Sears opened its first retail store and catalogue center on Chicago's west side The growth of the catalogue, on-the-mall format and quality service is what made Sears a national icon. In 1899, Kmart opened as a nickel-and-dime store. The low price appealed to shoppers and the chain quickly grew into one of the nation's preeminent retailers. Kmart filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002. Investor and financier Eddie Lampert then bought Kmart through his hedge fund, ESL investments. In 2005, Kmart bought Sears and as a part of the merger, formed Sears Holdings Corporation. Today SHC owns over 3,900 retail locations, employs nearly 300,000 associates. The company's legendary brands include Kenmore, Craftsman, DieHard, and Lands' End.
