This program is designed to recruit highly talented MBAs and develop them into corporate assets in senior leadership positions. SLPs take on rapidly accelerated career paths, executive mentorship, and structured training and development frameworks. SLP associates work with senior leaders and are expected to lead strategic efforts. SLP Program Structure

Flexibility - you create your career path

In year one, SLPs are placed on one of the top initiatives within one of the many Business Units at Sears Holdings. This project selection process is initiated 4-6 weeks prior to the SLP's start date by the SLP Program Director.

After completion of the initial project, the SLP experience can become rotational, if you want it to be. If you are interested in exploring different areas you are encouraged to do so. If you prefer to stay in your original Business Unit, that is encouraged as well. The experience is flexible, and what you would like to make of it.

During year one SLPs are given many other developmental opportunities such as weekly cohort meetings, specialized career coaching from the SLP Program Director, and mentorship from members of the executive team.

After year one, all SLPs are expected to assume a permanent role within a business. While this role is now considered "permanent", opportunities to work on additional projects and explore other areas of SHC continue to be available. The Program Director also continues in a mentorship role when needed. As new leadership opportunities are announced, the SLPs are encouraged to apply for these roles if fitting in their desired career path.

The Corporate Track

The SLP Corporate Track will allow you to work on key initiatives within one of our 25+ different Business Units. Roles range from marketing to finance, strategy to business development, merchandising to retail operations, logistics to online. In these roles you will make strategic decisions in retail's fast-paced environment. You can match your skill set and passion to move virtually anywhere within the company.

The Buyer Track

For the SLP with a high interest in merchandising, the SLP Buyer Track will allow for a flexible career path that mirrors the core organization of SHC. The SLP will initially be placed in an Associate Buyer role while completing their primary SLP project. Within a few months, once they have mastered that role, the SLP will move into a Buyer role where they have responsibility and ownership of a key merchandise category (including category strategy and performance, product selection, and P&L responsibility).

The Retail Track

This path will give SLPs the unique opportunity to work as a store manager and accelerate to District Manager (running 10-12 stores) and onto Regional Vice President. The track is a 3-5 years track starting in an Assistant Store Manager/Co-Manager role and progressing quickly depending on your capabilities and learning curve.

Within three months of joining the company, I was working on the strategy for our multi-billion dollar Online business. Shortly thereafter, I was also given charge of starting a completely new business with Online for which I created a plan, hired resources and executed on the plan. This level of responsibility and exposure is common at SHC and is what makes the program unique."

The Sears Holdings Culture

Where we've been

The Sears Holdings story has been years in the making. Sears, Roebuck & Co. began as a watch store in 1893. In 1925 Sears opened its first retail store and catalogue center on Chicago’s west side. The growth of the catalogue, on-the-mall format and quality service is what made Sears a national icon. In 1899 Kmart opened as a nickel-and-dime store. The low price appealed to shoppers, and the chain quickly grew into one of the nation’s preeminent retailers. Kmart filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002. Eddie Lampert then bought Kmart through his hedge fund, ESL Investments. In 2005, Kmart bought Sears and as part of the merger, formed Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC). Today, SHC owns over 2,500 retail locations.
