At Sears, I am a project manager for the South Region In-Home business. Most recently, I was the District Service General Manager for the Deep South district out of Pensacola, FL. I started at Sears in the retail store when I was 18 years old, fresh out of basic training and AIT and was just looking for a job to work me through college. My store manager and department manager were always more than willing to work with my schedule regarding drills and AT. Twenty three years later, I have had several supervisors and been fortunate to be promoted through various positions within the store and field organizations. Sears maintained strong Military support policies throughout that time and I NEVER had any issue or concern over my Military - civilian career conflicts.

I manage the Veteran hiring programs at Sears Holdings, and I think it is the most fulfilling and influential career I could have transitioned into. My new career enables me to share perspective with veterans looking to transition, and I can say whole heartedly, I don't feel that any organization demonstrated the efforts we do, on a national level, dedicated to hiring talented veterans. As a native Chicagoan, working at Sears Holdings gives me a great sense of pride and community, something that was a mainstay in the Army. This is an organization that takes pride in the product we put forth, and is very self-aware regarding our members and our associates.

I was on Ordnance Officer in the US Army and served two tours to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 4th Infantry Division. I'm currently the General Manager for the Pendergrass Distribution Center, which is a Large Appliance Direct Delivery Center. I have been with the company for a little over 3 years. I started my career with Sears in Dallas, TX as an Operations Manager after I transitioned out of the Army in 2010. I have learned that regardless of industry, logistics and a strong supply chain are the backbone of a successful organization.

Heroes at Home is a program Sears Holdings has created in partnership with Rebuilding Together in response to an urgent need to assist Military families facing hardship. By providing necessary repairs or adaptations to homes, Sears Holdings strives to improve the lives of Military families across America. Heroes at Home is one of the many initiatives through which Sears Holdings acknowledges the sacrifice made by our troops every day in the line of duty, while supporting and honoring those heroes who remain at home. Along with our comprehensive benefit program, Military servicemen and women also have additional benefits. The most notable is our Military Pay Differential and Benefits Continuation program. In September 2004, we extended our Military pay differential (fills the gap between Military pay and employer pay) and benefits continuation to 60 months for eligible employees called to duty in the Reserves or National Guard. Serving your country shouldn't come with a pay cut, and we'll make sure it doesn't.

Military Pay Differential and Benefits Continuation
  • In September 2004, we extended our Military pay differential (fills the gap between Military pay and employer pay) and benefits continuation to 60 months for eligible employees called to duty in the Reserves or National Guard.
    • Previously, policy provided 36 months of coverage.
  • While deployed, eligible employees can:
    • Continue participating in our life insurance, medical and dental programs.
    • Receive annual merit pay increases, incentive pay.
  • We hold a comparable position for deployed employees for up to five years.
  • We have encouraged and supported employees serving in the armed forces for decades.
    • Records indicate that we provided support to employees serving in the Military in 1916.
    • Our pay differential was first instituted in 1990 for Operation Desert Shield-Storm.
Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Statement of Support
  • We signed a Five Star Statement of Support of the ESGR, publicly demonstrating support for employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.
  • The five star level of support signifies that we:
    • Reviewed our human resources policies to ensure compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Acts Law.
    • Promote training for managers and supervisors to effectively manage associates who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
    • Adopted polices and programs that are "Above and Beyond" what is required by the USERRA Law.
    • Serve as an advocate for associate service in the National Guard and Reserve and helps to promote the mission of ESGR.
