Kmart Opens Second SuperCenter in City of Detroit

Location at 8 Mile Road and Telegraph Brings 367 Jobs and Expands 24-Hour Retailing Service in City

Kmart (NYSE: KM) today announced the opening of its second Kmart SuperCenter in the City of Detroit. The 24-hour store at Telegraph and 8 Mile Road opens on Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 8 a.m. Kmart's first Detroit SuperCenter opened in 1998, making the company the first major retailer to locate in the City of Detroit in more than 30 years.

"Kmart is thrilled to be opening our second location in the City of Detroit," said Chuck Conaway, Chairman and CEO of Kmart Corporation. "We opened a SuperCenter at 7 Mile and Meyers in Detroit three years ago and that store has consistently been one of our best performing SuperCenters. We appreciate the support of our hometown community. This is a testament to the positive efforts of business, government and community working together."

The 143,000 square foot SuperCenter sits on approximately 16 acres adjacent to the Bonnie Brook Golf Course. The store employs more than 360 people and is expected to generate more than $1 million in real estate, property and sales tax annually.

"I'm pleased to see Kmart open its second store in the City of Detroit, which will further strengthen our tax base and bring new jobs to city residents," said Mayor of Detroit Dennis Archer. "This project reflects the recognition that Detroit is the place to be."

In addition to an assortment of 40,000 grocery items, the store offers bakery, meat and seafood, fresh produce and a wide array of grocery amenities:

* Fresh produce is abundant at Kmart SuperCenter, and shoppers will be pleased to find some of the more exotic fruits and vegetables not available at smaller grocery stores.

* Melt-in-your-mouth rolls, cookies, jumbo muffins and other fresh goods tempt shoppers in the bakery. Kmart SuperCenter pastry chefs specialize in custom cakes.

* A full-service butcher shop stands ready to fill special orders. Shoppers on the go can grab prepackaged meat, chicken that's been pre-chopped and prepped for stir-frying or fresh seafood, such as peel-and-eat shrimp.

* The hot and cold delicatessen menus offer freshly made items such as potato salad and rotisserie chicken, as well as many gourmet selections.

Kmart SuperCenter's convenience and high-quality selection doesn't end in the grocery aisles. Customers can shop for everyday and specialty merchandise before or after loading up their carts with groceries. Shoppers looking for that special someone won't want to miss the newly updated Jewelry displays highlighting Kmart's extensive selection of fine and costume Jewelry.

Kmart SuperCenter's merchandise assortment offers recognized national brands such as Rubbermaid, Black and Decker, and Fruit of the Loom. Combined with Kmart's own high-quality private labels such as Sesame Street clothing for kids, Kathy Ireland and Jaclyn Smith women's apparel, Route 66 clothing for the entire family, Martha Stewart Everyday home fashions, Thom McAn shoes, White-Westinghouse appliances, BenchTop tools and Penske Automotive products, Kmart SuperCenter offers style and value not found anywhere else.
