KMART CORPORATION REPORTS JANUARY SALES INCREASE

TROY, Mich., February 3, 2000 -- Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today reported that total consolidated sales increased 5.4% to $2.114 billion for the four-week period ended January 26, 2000 compared with $2.006 billion for the same period last year. On a comparable store basis, January consolidated sales increased 3.6%.

Total consolidated sales were $10.955 billion for the 13-week period ended January 26, 2000, up 5.3% from $10.401 billion for the 13-week period ended January 27, 1999. Comparable store consolidated sales rose 3.9%.

Total consolidated sales were $35.913 billion for the 52-week period ended January 26, 2000, up 6.6% from $33.674 billion for the 52-week period ended January 27, 1999. Comparable store consolidated sales rose 4.8%.

"January sales met our expectations, considering the impact of winter storms during the last 10 days," said Floyd Hall, Chairman, President, and CEO of Kmart. "Categories showing particular strength for the month of January include home appliances, housewares, home electronics, home décor, outdoor living, as well as toys, do-it-yourself, athletic sporting goods, pharmaceuticals, fashion accessories, and grocery items."
