KMART CORP REPORTS 1.1% SAME-STORE SALES INCREASE FOR APRIL

Troy, Michigan, May 10, 2001 — Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today reported that for the four-week period ended May 2, 2001 net sales increased 1.1% on a same-store basis. Total net sales were $2.759 billion, a decline of 0.4% from $2.769 billion for the same period last year.

Net sales for the thirteen-week period ended May 2, 2001 increased 1.7% on a same-store basis. Total net sales were $8.337 billion, flat from $8.338 billion for the same period last year.

"We are pleased that for the sixth consecutive month, Kmart's same-store sales met or exceeded expectations. This was accomplished as we continue to reduce our reliance on advertising and improve our store execution," said Chuck Conaway, Chairman & CEO of Kmart. "Focusing on our operating metrics, our in-stock levels have reached an all-time high, providing a quality shopping experience for our customers.
